How To Clean A Saddle Pad

How To Clean A Saddle Pad

Three Things You Need to Know

Learning how to clean a Western saddle pad is an important rite of passage for any avid equestrian. It is a task that must be completed if you want to prolong the functionality of the wool saddle pad, and if you want to reduce the buildup of unwanted hair and dirt.

While it would be nice to simply toss a Western saddle pad into the washer or dryer, these actions can result in a damaged pad. Instead of taking a risk with the washing machine, you can use the following tips to easily free your Western wool saddle pad of unwanted hair, dirt and sweat.

Follow These Tips

There are several steps that you can take to clean your Western saddle pad. Keep in mind, the number of steps that you have to complete will vary depending on how dirty your saddle pad has become.

  1. Use a rubber curry comb in a circular motion on the bottom of the pad.
This motion, which is similar to the grooming method used on your horse, will help to lift the dirt, dried sweat and hair from the pad. Flip the pad over a fence post after you are done currying, and use the flat of your hand or a stiff riding crop to further loosen the dirt, dried sweat and hair.
  2. After using a rubber curry comb, it might be time for you to use a vacuum.
Make sure that you keep the pad flat throughout the vacuuming stage so that you don’t cause unwanted damage to the pad’s edges.
  3. For very dirty Western saddle pads you will need to use a garden hose after the first two stages are completed.
Use cold water to spray the wool pad from the middle. Push the dirt and hair toward the outward edges of the saddle pad. Never spray straight down onto the pad; this will simply drive the dirt further into the woolen fibers.

If you hang the pad up by a clip, you might cause it to tear, rip or otherwise distort in shape. Instead, hang the pad up to dry by placing it over a saddle rack, fence post or blanket rack.

Discovering the secret to cleaning a wool Western saddle pad is as easy as following the above three steps. Through the simple act of learning how to clean a saddle pad, you can ensure that this vital piece of equine tack stays in good working condition. Then, it can continue to provide additional comfort, support and protection for your horse throughout each and every ride.
