Worst Part About Horses…

If you ask me, the worst part about having horses is there’s never enough time. We raise them for two years. Then we spend a year getting them broke. And the next few years we’re teaching them to become a horse and see all the things of the world. Then the day comes when they are ready to compete. They are green and still have a lot to learn. They spend hours tied up learning patience, they make hundreds of practice runs and lope countless circles. Then one day when they are about 9-11 years old, something clicks. They are softer and kinder and seasoned and they become our #1. They know what you want before you even know.

They become mature and reliable. They read the play and want to win. These are the years everyone wants. Once a horse turns 15-16 they become a “senior”. This age (in my opinion), this is the best years of their lives. They are old enough to be wise and young enough to still be athletic. You start saving them for the biggest rodeos or most important runs, but you know at this point you are on borrowed time.

And If you’re lucky enough to be their person through each one of these stages, you know that’s not enough time with a horse. Cherish each run and celebrate each win, celebrate them and love your horse hard. It took years to get there, and you only get a short time to enjoy. #BestEverPads
